South Wales Police officer denies assaulting suspect during arrest

A South Wales Police officer has denied beating a suspect during a late night arrest.

PC Rowan Knight, 30, is accused of assaulting Christian Summers while making the arrest in Whitchurch, Cardiff.

Shaven-headed PC Knight appeared at Cardiff Magistrates Court wearing a white shirt, dark blue floral tie and camel-coloured coat.

The court heard up to four other officers are set to be called as witnesses.

PC Knight pleaded not guilty to a single charge of assault by beating over the alleged attack on Northern Avenue, Whitchurch, Cardiff at around 2am on Saturday, January 9 this year.

PC Knight, of Pencoed, was handed unconditional bail and a further hearing was scheduled on September 13 with a provisional trial date listed in October.

District Judge David Webster said the trial would take place in front of him.

He told PC Knight: “That trial will take place on the 5 and 6 of October subject to any changes. It is important you stay in touch with your solicitor so any changes can be communicated to you.”
