Welsh fans of Gogglebox were in for a telly treat on Friday night as the first episode of the latest Celebrity Gogglebox was aired – and Sir Tom Jones was on the show.
While Sir Tom was amazed by a McDonald’s meal hack, discussed his struggles with dyslexia, and revealed that he’d never baked a cake – viewers were most intrigued by his phone.
Despite his wealth, Sir Tom is the proud owner of an old-style flip phone, which he said he struggled to text on.
“I can’t text on it, I don’t spell well,” he told friend and fellow The Voice judge Anne-Marie. “I can read – no problem, but I’m no good at spelling. I’ll have to read it and you write it.”
Anne-Marie was stunned when Sir Tom revealed he had never baked a cake.
“I’ve never baked a cake ever,” he said. “I’ll sing you a song while you’re baking the cake. But that’s about it.”
Despite never baking one, his love for a sweet treat was plain to see, as he got right into Bake Off: The Professionals, and found it hilarious when one contestant’s creation toppled over. He had predicted it was about to topple, warning; “That’s top heavy look, it’s not a very attractive looking thing is it?”
He said his favourite cake was chocolate, followed closely by sticky toffee pudding. And his love of food on the show didn’t stop there, when he was amazed by Josie Gibson’s ‘old hack’ by balancing a McDonald’s meal on a drink.
“She’s balancing the chicken mcnuggets on one side, the chips on the other, and the straw in the middle, so she can have it all at the same time,” he said in surprise.
We also got a feeling for his cool and collected nature, in true Sir Tom style, when he was completely unmoved by a T-rex jumping out on Jurassic Park.
