Utility firm warns over bank holiday gardening and DIY projects

The firm is reminding the public about the risks of damaging gas pipes during outdoor work, particularly as activity increases over the bank holiday weekend.

A spokesman for Wales & West Utilities said: “We look after the gas pipes beneath our streets, gardens and fields, helping to keep homes and businesses safe and supplied now and into the future.

“As the May bank holiday approaches, and the weather begins to improve, we know many people will be planning outdoor DIY, gardening and building projects.

“This uptick in activity can present risks.”

Each year, accidental damage to gas pipes happens when people dig without checking for hidden infrastructure, causing gas leaks, fires and explosions.

Such incidents can put lives, homes and livelihoods at risk and result in costly repairs and significant disruption, and you may be charged for repair costs or face prosecution.

Wales & West Utilities is urging people to take precautions before starting work on fencing, extensions, garden rooms, driveways or even routine gardening, and to consider whether it’s safe to dig.

The company advises a simple three-step approach, summarised as ‘DIG’:

D is for Dial – contact Wales & West Utilities on 029 2027 8912 or visit www.wwutilities.co.uk/dig to check where gas pipes are located.

I is for Investigate – obtain up-to-date gas network plans and consider whether a site visit is needed. If your property has a gas meter, remember the supply pipe runs underground from it, so extra care is needed nearby.

G is for Go ahead – but only if it’s safe.

Dig with caution, especially when using mechanical tools, as damaging gas pipes poses serious risks.
